This is fresh turmeric which means there is no hardened outer skin to peel. Stores fresh for about 3 weeks, at which point it may be cured or frozen for longer keeping.
Michael Rayburn recommends freezing fresh turmeric to use all year. Simply pull out a piece for grating, as needed! No need to thaw.
